February eNewsletter: Winter Athletics Recap

Basketball

The Pilots Basketball Program has had an eventful season so far. The Varsity squad has played a challenging schedule with the likes of five of the Top 25 Schools in the State. Led by captains Miranda Hernandez ‘17, Gabi Orcino ‘17 and Sarah McHenry ‘17, the Pilots have opened a lot of eyes throughout San Diego. The entire team is working hard to position themselves for a San Diego CIF Section title run. The JV Basketball team is led by captains Nicole Stepovich ‘19 and Linda Alvarez ‘19, their leading scorer, Madison Lunde ‘19 and talented point guard, Jessica Dharmawan ‘18. They are currently 6-1 in the league and 15-6 overall.

Soccer

The Varsity soccer team is off to its best start in school history with a record of 19-0-1. They kicked off the season by winning both the Bonita Vista Barons Tournament and Lady Vaqueros Tournament. Ashlin Healy ‘18 was named MVP of the Barons tournament. They won the Lady Vaqueros Tournament with a balance of solid defense and a high power offense. The Pilots outscored their opponents 36-0 and went on to beat Santana in the finals 7-0. The stellar defense was led by junior captain Jenna Chandler ‘18. The high powered offense was led by sisters Ashlin and Erin Healy ‘19, who each scored 12 goals in five tournament games. Both teams traveled to Lakewood, CA to face our sister CSJ school, St. Joseph’s High School. Varsity is in firm command of 1st place in the City Eastern League and are currently ranked #9 in the county.

Water Polo

This year, OLP has its first ever Water Polo team! The team is comprised of almost all beginners to the sport. Our first game was against La Jolla High School where the Pilots scored the first two goals in OLP history. There has been tremendous growth by our players as they learn the sport by leaps and bounds. This was evident in their first ever tournament in which two of the matches had to be decided by tie-breakers. The team has scored a respectable 26 goals, all scored against six very experienced teams. The team has shown courage, perseverance and teamwork. OLP Water Polo is already making some noise in their inaugural season.

Surf

The OLP & Saints surf team won their 4th contest against El Camino High School on Saturday. Chloe Faucher ’19 advanced to individuals in longboard and worked her way through finals, where she took home the 3rd place medal. Grace Kotnik ’19 advanced to individuals in short board and made it all the way through finals, where she took home the 3rd place medal.

Cheer

The Pilot Cheer teams were once again in action this month. JV earned the silver medal in the California State Championships in Ontario, CA. The Varsity Cheer Squad also earned the silver medal in the Super Varsity Intermediate Division. This adds to last week’s impressive Grand Champion honors that they earned at the San Diego Showdown at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. We can’t wait to see how they do in their next competition in Las Vegas on February 17. Coach Casey Popp was recognized as the CheerPros Coach/Director of the Year, an honor he graciously shared with Coach Eric Claxton and Ms. Laura Rodriguez. Congratulations to the entire program.
