Varsity Basketball

The Varsity Pilots are off to a great start this year with quality wins over Mt. Carmel, Mira Mesa, and Xavier Prep. The Pilots recently returned from their annual Palm Desert Trip and finished in 4th place out of 12 schools at the Rob Diaz Memorial Classic. The Pilot Hoopers graduated 5 seniors from the 2019 Eastern League Championship team and are a very young this year. With youth comes energy….. and this Pilot team has a ton of it!

The Pilots have been led on the offensive end by returning starters Chloe James (21-12 ppg) and Claire Nowicki (‘21-10 ppg). Defensively, the Pilots have been led by Ally Medeiros ’23, Mallory Downing ’21, and Laura Vazquez ’21.

The Pilots will begin the defense of their Eastern League Championship on Friday, January 10 at 6:00 pm against the Lincoln Hornets. Come out and support a great group of girls!

JV Basketball

The JV Basketball team has been playing well and competing in each game, despite injury and illness limiting some players. The Pilots earned the runner up trophy in a preseason tournament and have learned a lot from losing some very close games by one or two points. The team is focusing on positivity, improvement, and effort. Junior Bella Riggs ’21, Sophomore Gabriella Baldeaux ’22, and Freshmen Lucia Bravence ’23 have been leading the way for the Pilots who prepare for regular season play in January.

Basketball Novice

The Novice Basketball Pilots are off to a good start for their 2019-2020 season. The team entered the Montgomery Novice Basketball Tournament and went 2-2 in Pool Play. The team finished as runner-up for the tournament. The team plays aggressive defense and does not back down. As a result, most of the Novice games are close score affairs, giving the Pilots a good chance to win all the games they play.

Through the first 7 games of the season, the Pilots are led offensively by Sidney Sarmiento ’23 at 4.8 ppg, Aisling Ward ’22 with 4.4 ppg, and Priscilla Palacios ’23 at 4.3 PPG. Paloma Parente ’22 leads the team in blocks and steals and anchors the Pilot’s fearless defense.

The Novice team started their Grossmont Novice League on Saturday, December 14 against Valhalla followed by a game on December 21 versus Montgomery High School. The Pilots were busy during Christmas Break playing in the Bonita Vista High School Novice Tournament December 26 – December 30 at Southwestern College.

This month, our OLP Varsity Cheer team brought home OLP’s first ever CIF Cheer Championship. After two years of earning CIF Runner-Up honors, the Pilots performed a near flawless routine! Coach Popp and Coach Claxton were on hand along with members of the JV Cheer team to witness this historic win. The OLP student body was able to celebrate and acknowledge this accomplishment with the team at our Winter Sports Pep Rally where a video of the performance was played for the entire school.  Cheer captains and Coach Popp presented the banner and championship trophy to Mrs. Hooper and Dr. Lek in front of an appreciative school community. This is OLP’s 13th CIF Championship and fourth championship in the last 4 years!

JV & Varsity Dance Teams will be competing in their first regional competition of the season on January 18 at Rancho Bernardo High School. Varsity has a total of 6 brand new routines, along with a number of solos and duos, and JV has 3 routines. This is our only local competition so we would love as much of our Pilot community there to support us as possible!

Assistant Team Captain Maille Flynn ‘22 won the 2019 Youth State Champion of the California Western Dressage Association for ages 14-17. She competed on her quarter horse, Jacob, throughout the year to earn this award. Western Dressage is a discipline that combines Western riding traditions with the techniques of Classical English Dressage.

Varsity Soccer

The Varsity Pilots are off to a good start this year and finished as finalists in the top bracket of the San Diego Holiday Jubilee. The Pilots had two good wins against Westview and Eastlake. Sydney Pack ’21 and Lily Strack ’21 posted shutouts in both of those wins. The attack has been led by Haley Phillips ’22 and Andrea Tena ’22 who each have one goal and one assist. The Pilots have a game against West Hills High School on December 20 and will play in the NOCC Tournament in Los Angeles on December 27-28.

Varsity Water Polo

Varsity has been moving well this month! They won their first game against Montgomery High School. At the end of the month, they played Mission Bay High School. The Varsity team kept up a fast pace and pushed hard throughout their entire game. Unfortunately, the Pilots lost with a score of 19-4, however, the team was able to carry out many of their plays and learned a lot from the game. Goals came from Lucie Kaskoun ’22, Olivia Cowan ’22, and Dayle Cowan ’21.

JV Water Polo

The JV team has been playing very well and making great progress. They made great passes throughout the game. Although the pilots fell to Mission Bay, 15-5, they worked on communicating as a team. Estella Davalos ’23 and Kyla Buss ’21 scored for the Pilots. Standout player, Maria Dominguez ’21, also made three strong attempts at a goal. The JV team is looking forward to putting their plays to the test at their next game.
