Erin Healy Named San Diego Sports Association Star of the Month

Each month, the San Diego Sports Association honors as many as 4 professionals, 6 amateurs, and 6 prep athletes as Stars of the Month for their outstanding athletic accomplishments. Stars of the Month are recognized in the San Diego Union-Tribune, via the Fowler Family Awards Center at Petco Park, on the Sports Association’s social media channels and website, and at San Diego’s premier sports awards gala, Salute to the Champions. They also receive a Breitbart Certificate of Athletic Achievement.

This month one of our own student-athletes, Erin Healey ’19, was recognized as a Star of the Month. The caption read “She is headed to Gonzaga University in the fall. This senior forward led the Pilots to a 7-1-1 record, twice scoring four goals in a single game. Healy is the go-to scorer for OLP, collecting 33 goals on the season along with five assists” Congrats Erin!

Novice Basketball

The 2018-19 Novice Basketball Season was one of growth and development. The team came together as one unit very quickly. Throughout the season the players worked on developing and increasing their basketball skills. The team played 5 JV level teams during the season and improved in each and every game. The team’s statistics bear this out. Their average margin of loss during their first 10 games was -17 points. During their last 6 games, they increased their average offensive output from 12 points/game to over 16 points/game. More impressive was that the Novice Pilots improved their defense. During their first 10 games and they allowed an average of 29 points/game. During their last 6 games, they held their opponents to only 19 points/game, a 10 point improvement.  The team’s leading scorers were Vane Palacios ‘22 with 71 points (4.8 PPG), Lauren Kennedy ‘22 with 41 points (2.6 PPG) and Joann Cayabyab ‘22 with 27 points (1.9 PPG). It was a very fun and enjoyable season!

JV Basketball

The JV basketball team worked hard throughout the entire season and consistently demonstrated inspiring grit, heart, and hustle. The Pilots employed excellent ball handling, a commitment to rebounding and stellar defense, along with timely shooting, and a full court press to set up layups off of forced turnovers to race out to a 9 and 1 preseason record, including winning a preseason tournament. The regular season started off well and the Pilots showed remarkable courage and dedication as they stayed strong throughout injuries and illnesses. During one particularly challenging stretch, the Pilots lost two very close games by one point each and then the third game with very limited player availability. As the Pilots got healthy and back to full strength, they set a goal to win their last four regular season games, which included playing the three teams that had previously defeated them. In very inspired and impressive fashion, the Pilots focused, supported and lifted each other up, and put forth tremendous effort to achieve their goal of winning all four games, including the last game on the road, to finish the regular season at 9 and 3. The Pilots ended their season on a very exciting and positive note with an overall record of 18 and 4. It was a fun, energetic, and inspired season for the JV basketball Pilots!

Varsity Basketball

The Varsity Pilots had an outstanding season and finished with an overall record of 22-6. We move on to the Semifinals on Thursday against the number 1 ranked team, JSerra High School.  Erin Healy was named Eastern League Player of the Year. Erin Healy leads the team with 40 goals. Rylie Curran leads the team with 17 assists. We are so proud of this team and looking to finish strong with a run to the State title.

JV Waterpolo

The JV Water Polo definitely showed their dedication over the course of the season. With the girls being brand new to the sport and the other half returning for another season, the team grew stronger in their water polo skills and their confidence. The girls kept up the enthusiasm throughout the entire season.  We look forward to next season! Go, Pilots!

Varsity Waterpolo

The Varsity water polo girls have grown so much within these three last year’s. From not knowing the game to having a 4-game winning streak. Unfortunately, we lose 4 seniors this year which started this program and will definitely leave a mark in this sport. Thanks to them we now have multiple girls coming back next year.
