OLP Varsity Softball

By Coach Angioletti

The 2014 “Pilots” are determined to make this the third consecutive year in which they will be invited to the San Diego CIF Sectional Playoffs. The degree of difficulty in reaching the playoffs has increased this year due to the team’s elevation from Division 3 to Division 2, based on their outstanding performance in 2013. Last year’s team went undefeated in league play and completed the season with 25 wins and only 5 losses, one of the best records last year in San Diego County. Varsity Coaches Natalie Garrett, Dena Young and Tom Angioletti expected 2014 to be a rebuilding year, based on the fact that only 5 players from last year’s team would be returning to the ball field this year. Those players, Senior Natalie Ireland, Juniors Lauren Brown, Katherine Prevo, and Sophomores Maria Balistreri, Janet Paruleski have proven to us that would not be the case. Joining the team after February tryouts were Juniors Olivia Alves, Julia Camara, Fairleigh Quinn and Sophomores Jessica Carreon, Tatiana Castilleja, Bailey McCormick, and Gabby Ripa.

As we enter our Easter Break the team finds itself with an overall record of 12 wins, 4 losses and 1 tie. In league play, the Pilots remain undefeated with 5 wins and 0 losses, tied for first place with San Diego H.S. Our defense continues to improve behind the pitching of Lauren Brown and Kat Prevo, as noted by the fact that 7 of our wins have been shutouts. Lauren Brown has been exceptional as she continues to be one of the top 5 pitchers in San Diego and Imperial Counties in the following categories: 10 Wins, 110 Strikeouts and an Earned Run Average (ERA) of 1.0 per game. Joining Lauren as outstanding defensive players have been shortstop Kat Prevo, Maria Balistreri in centerfield, Janet Paruleski at third base, Olivia Alves at first base and catcher Natalie Ireland. Natalie is also rated as one of the top 3 catchers in the San Diego Section.

The OLP offense also continues to show good improvement from a slow start at the beginning of the year. Led by Kat Prevo who currently has a batting average of .551, a slugging average of .897, 22 runs batted in (RBI’S), and 22 runs scored. She is currently ranked in the top 15 players throughout our CIF Section in all of these categories. Closely behind is Natalie Ireland who currently is hitting for an average of .468. Leading the team in stolen bases is Janet Paruleski, who has become a valuable leadoff hitter that the team needs. Janet’s improved hitting and bunting has been a major asset for our team. Olivia Alves has also contributed significantly to our offense with her extra base hitting and RBI’s. Each of the aforementioned players deserves credit for her performance; however each player on this team has contributed to our success, and without each one of them we would not be the team we are. All our coaches appreciate the effort and dedication shown by this team, without which we would not be in contention for another league championship, and another seeding in the upcoming playoffs.

We also thank the parents, grandparents, and friends for working with us during the year despite unforeseen schedule changes, various other commitments and responsibilities, and still somehow managing to show up and support us at our games. A special thanks also to all the OLP teachers that managed to show up for our “Teachers Appreciation Game”. You were the 10th player on the field that evening.
