October Enewsletter: Athletics Updates

Golf Team
The Varsity Golf team is in full swing this year as we head into the month of October. Our team is anchored by two accomplished seniors, Dana Zapanta and Abbey Sarnowski. Both have shot personal best scores of 43 this year and serve as co-captains. The other seniors on the team are Haley Antoine, Laura Handy, Sarah Wreschinsky, and Stefany Chadkewicz provide experience and stability to our lineup Junior Gabrielle Ripa is positioning herself to becoming one of next year’s team leaders. The addition of freshman Crystal Butcher will strengthen the Pilots golf program for the next three years. The team looks to improve on the 2-7 overall record and surprise some opponents as the season comes to an end.

OLP Tennis has had a great season thus far. Congratulations on big wins defeating Cathedral Catholic 11-7 and then beating La Jolla with the final score 9-9 and coming down to double sets ultimately winning 6-3. Way to go!!

Volleyball has had a lot of great competition moving up into the Western League this season. Varsity has had a lot of close games with big wins against La Jolla Country Day and Bonita Vista in the Fall Classic Tournament. They have also defeated rival Coronado in 3 sets and University City in league play. The JV team is really strong and currently undefeated this season! Keep it up!

Varsity Volleyball
The Volleyball teams have moved to the Western League this year and are looking forward to the challenges that will come with new opponents. The teams began their league play on Friday, September 19. The varsity fell to the Scripps Ranch Falcons in four games, the freshmen lost a well-played three game match and the JV team won their match.

OLP Varsity Volleyball is off to a strong start. The Pilots tied for 3rd in Gold at the Fall Classic with notable wins against Division 1 Bonita Vista and Open Division La Jolla Country Day. Continuing that success, OLP defeated West Hills on the road and took down old Eastern Conference rival Coronado HS in three sets at home.

Returning to the varsity squad this year are seniors Abby Suster (Setter/Captain) and Clara Calleran (Opposite), Juniors Jessica McRoskey (Outside Hitter/Captain), Emily Marty (Setter/Libero), Barbara Mera (Outside Hitter), and Sophomore Lauren Widasky (Outside Hitter). New to the team are Juniors Kate Hofbauer, Aubrey La Bonte-Clark, and Makaela Nagy. Also joining Varsity are Sophomores Ivy Yahnke and Amanda Wylie, along with Freshman Gabi Preciado.

Cross Country
Doing something for the first time is often a bit intimidating, but suiting up and running in your first high school cross country meet can be downright scary. All those different teams, a course you’re not familiar with, parents and friends all around shouting and yelling. There’s even a guy holding a gun. If their first race is any indication, a number of OLP first-year runners have interesting if not brilliant careers in front of them.

OLP took the first five places in the JV heat of the season opener, the Mustang Invitational at Rohr Park in Bonita. So dominant was OLP that they placed nine runners in the top twenty finishers. Eighteen teams participated. Leading the pack home was freshman Madeline Klem, followed by freshman Megan Gronstad, junior Katlyn McDonough, freshman Samantha Carranza and freshman Kaylee Gibbons. Madeline’s time of 11:43 for the 1.67-mile course works out to a race pace of exactly 7-minutes per mile, and her teammates all ran in the low 7’s. Very promising indeed.
The OLP veterans in the varsity heat also ran well, defeating league rivals La Jolla and Serra while finishing 5th overall. Led by sophomore Lacey Yahnke, the team packed well for the first two miles of their 2.2-mile course and finished strongly, indicating the extra mileage of league competition will help rather than hinder them down the road.

OLP has moved to CIF Division 4 this year, giving the team a better chance of doing well in the CIF finals in November.
