Letter from the Assistant Head of School
Dear Parents & Students,
Fall is upon us and although in many ways it still feels like summer, it must be fall, otherwise there would not be so many pumpkin flavored offerings in stores now! With the arrival of fall at OLP we will experience first quarter grade reports, our annual Open House for prospective students, PSAT/PLAN testing, Parent Contact Week, the magazine drive trip to Disneyland and of course, the tradition of OLP/Saints Freshman Dance Lessons.
First Quarter Grade Reports will be sent home via the parent email(s) registered with Jupiter on Wednesday, October 15, 2014. Should you want a paper copy mailed please contact Mrs. Chris Abdenour, the school Registrar a [email protected] Also on October 15th, freshman, sophomores and juniors will take the Aspire ACT (9th grade) or the Collegeboard PSAT (10th & 11th grades). Please support your daughter by making sure she is well rested and partakes in a healthy breakfast on the day of testing. Should you want to learn more about either test and what advantages they have to offer your daughter, please visit one of the following sites, https://www.collegeboard.org/psat-nmsqt or http://www.discoveractaspire.org/parent-overview/. Freshman will have a 12:00 pm dismissal and Sophomores & Juniors will be dismissed at 11:30 pm. Seniors have the day off and we hope they attend the annual College Fair which is hosted by OLP and includes over 100 representatives from colleges and universities around the country. The College Fair is open to all grade levels and will take place in the Holy Family Event Center at 6:30 PM.
Have you checked Jupiter Ed lately? Jupiter is a wonderful tool to both monitor your daughter’s academic process and communicate with her teachers. Should you have any academic concerns, Parent Contact Week is scheduled for October 20, 2014 – October 24, 2014. This is an opportunity to engage in a teacher, student, parent conference. Should you want to take advantage of this opportunity please contact your daughter’s teacher directly to schedule an appointment. Students are required to partake in the conference process as research indicates their participation in conferences leads to greater academic growth and more accountability. Please note that Wednesday, October 22, 2014 is a 12:45 pm dismissal to help facilitate this process.
New this year are Faculty Office Hours. Each full time faculty member has selected two, 20 minute time slots within school hours in which they are committed to meeting with students (part time faculty, administrators and counselors will continue to meet with students by appointment). The document of Faculty Office Hours, including specifics related to times and locations can be found on aolp.org under the Academics tab. OLP faculty office hours emulate the collegiate model and have been developed to help students engage more directly with their teachers. Beyond email and expressing concerns during class times, students are now able to meet consistently with their teachers to receive additional help or clarifications.
Over the course of the month of October we will invite more than 1,000 prospective students and their families onto campus! These events include Eighth Grade Visitation Days, STEAM Day and our annual Open House. Thank you to those of you who support our efforts as volunteers. A big thank you as well to those of you who act as our ambassadors in the greater San Diego community. Recruitment is most definitely a community effort and we greatly appreciate all the support your provide.
We hope you can join us for our school mass on Thursday, October 9, 2014 at 11:00 am. Please keep our students in your daily thoughts and prayers and know that as a school community you are in ours.
Mrs. Jessica Hooper
Assistant Head of School
