STEM Students Visit Qualcomm

On Wednesday January 24, a group of 23 students taking advanced STEM courses headed to Qualcomm headquarters for an exciting field trip. The students were treated to a light breakfast, and then they were whisked off to tour Qualcomm’s on-site Museum and IT Department. The museum tour provided students with a series of snapshots from Qualcomm’s contributions to technological innovation, and the IT Department tour helped students understand the unique scope of the technological demands at Qualcomm. Afterward, students donned static smocks and walked through the on-site, prototype-manufacturing facility. There, students observed live fabrication of smartphone prototypes and gained an appreciation for the tight levels of quality control required to make standard-setting electronic devices.

Following the morning tours, the group headed back to the Qualcomm Museum to enjoy lunch with a group of female leaders from Qualcomm. After everyone had gotten the chance to enjoy most of her delicious lunch, the women from Qualcomm formed a panel and fielded questions related to their careers and roles within the company. Toward the end of the panel session, students were invited to ask questions of the professional group.

The OLP students are tremendously grateful to Qualcomm for showing such hospitality. Special thanks are due to Carrie Sawyer for coordinating the event and connecting our girls with a diverse group of amazing female professionals.
