With her wide ranging experience with students from diverse multicultural backgrounds, Kristen works to build knowledge, understanding and respect between the students and the world around them on their journey through education and beyond.
In 2012, Kristen attained her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Syracuse University with a concentration in dismantling societal cycles that contribute to the school-to-prison pipeline. Kristen passionately approaches teaching with an emphasis on respect, empathy, rigor and equity to develop an environment where our youth can succeed and be agents of change now and in the future. After tutoring Somali refugee youth from 2008-2012 in New York, teaching English abroad in Shanghai, China in 2014, and developing curriculum for a literacy program through the YMCA from 2015-2016, Kristen then received her Master of Arts in Teaching with a Single Subject Credential in Social Studies in 2016 from University of Southern California. She went on to teach Government, US History, World History and AVID in the San Diego Unified School District from 2016-2020. During her time teaching, Kristen tapped into her athletic past and coached girls’ volleyball, basketball and softball from 2015-2020.
Kristen’s passion for history was sparked by remarkable educators during her time at TASIS England International High School and higher education courses. Her experiences growing up in the United Kingdom and traveling to areas of the world with rich histories sparked a passion for learning about the past to better understand the present and future. Kristen implements a Socio-cultural and Inquiry based pedagogy with the intent to inspire her students to think critically about the information and the world around us, she encourages the girls to participate in conversation, be curious, ask questions, to strengthen their critical thinking and problem solving abilities. In her spare time, Kristen enjoys being outdoors, camping, playing beach volleyball and exploring the culinary arts.
